What We Teach

Middle school at Escola Cidade Jardim

As students move from PlayPen to middle school at Escola Cidade Jardim they take a very important step.

Entering early puberty is a complex and often confusing process for young adults, combined with the increased academic expectations of middle school. We accompany our students on this transitional journey by planning a well-balanced and creative curriculum that challenges and supports them in equal measure.

In middle school, students spend 40% of their time in English immersion with the remaining time spent 50% in Portuguese and 10% in Spanish. As with elementary school, this balance between the IMYC (International Middle Years Curriculum) and the Brazilian curriculum allows us to examine key concepts in a variety of ways across both languages and cultures.

Developing the whole child

In alignment with safeguarding we continue with our Personal, Social, Health & Economic Education program, challenging students to question their habits and points of view. Our aim is to direct students to lead healthy lifestyles and to make measured decisions before taking action.

Additionally, we focus on personal goals throughout the middle school years. We believe this is extremely important in helping to nurture independent thinkers who can successfully navigate through life, meeting challenges head-on and finding creative solutions to real-world problems.

We encourage active participation in projects that connect ECJ with other Cognita schools around the world, and involvement in social projects that build a better community, both inside and outside of the school’s grounds.

A welcome from our Head of Middle School

Every new school year brings promises, hopes and challenges. With the support of their teachers, our students will continue to achieve and develop. When our knowledge grows, our understanding and empathy increase.

Defining and maintaining clear goals is key to supporting our students’ progression, along with promoting a growth mindset. Only together can we create a more understanding, welcoming and fair world.
